Ecommerce news and updates

Shopify added Purolator as a new carrier on Shopify Shipping. If you are a merchant with a location in Canada, you can now purchase domestic shipping labels from Purolator.

Shopify now automatically zero-rates eligible products for the Canadian tax holiday and simplifies tax collection by calculating shipping tax proportionally for orders with both zero-rated and taxable items. This blended rate applies only to GST and requires merchants to use registration-based taxes.

Google Merchant Center now lets merchants highlight first-time order discounts in Shopping Ads.

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear TikTok’s appeal against the U.S. ban on January 10th.

Here’s a simple holiday tip for the week—follow your dreams! Whether it’s starting that business you’ve been thinking about, learning a new skill, or taking a leap towards your goals, now is the perfect time to begin. The future is yours to shape—go for it!

🍯 MegaLag exposes Honey influencer scam

Popular investigative YouTuber MegaLag has released a video exposing deceptive practices by Honey, the browser extension owned by PayPal (acquired for $4 billion in January 2020). While Honey claims to save users money by applying discount codes at checkout, the investigation reveals troubling practices affecting both influencers and consumers.

Key findings from the investigation:

Affiliate link hijacking: Honey exploits "last-click attribution" to override affiliate cookies, redirecting commissions from content creators to itself—without consent. Influencers unknowingly lose significant revenue, earning only small sponsorships while forfeiting larger affiliate commissions.

Manipulated discounts: Honey selectively displays lower-value promo codes, withholding better deals from users to favor its merchant partners. This practice limits consumer savings while benefiting merchants.

Misleading cashback rewards: Honey’s PayPal Rewards program (formerly Honey Gold) claims to offer cashback but keeps the majority of affiliate commissions. For example, NordVPN paid Honey $35 per transaction, yet users received only 89 cents.

MegaLag’s video raises concerns for influencers, bloggers, and affiliate marketers who may unknowingly be victims of Honey’s practices. It also highlights ethical issues about consumer trust, as Honey may prioritize profits over genuine savings.

PayPal and Honey representatives have been invited to respond to the claims.

Photo of the week

The winning images from the fourth annual Natural Landscape Photography Awards have been announced. My favorite photo captures a dramatic seascape on the southeast coast of Iceland, featuring massive waves rolling towards the shore with offshore winds creating sea spray and small rainbows in the mist. The scene evokes the energy and intensity of an army marching into battle, inspiring its title, 'Into Battle.'

That's it for today!
