Shopify Entrepreneur Weekly

Helping Shopify merchants navigate the Shopify ecosystem for winning outcomes

Hey there,

This week is a big one - from Yotpo sunsetting its Email & SMS tools to Chrome auto-generating reviews about your store (without your input), plus a game-changing update to how Shopify handles discounts.

Here’s what we’ve got for you:

  • Yotpo shuts down Email & SMS – what’s next?

  • Chrome adds AI-generated store reviews (yes, really)

  • Shopify's new discount system makes coding and apps obsolete

  • Tip of the Week: Why you must migrate off Yotpo before Q4

  • Theme spotlight: Edge – elegance, speed & conversion built in

Let’s get into it 🚀

This Week’s Shopify Updates

1. . Shopify launches customer-specific automatic discounts (no apps or code needed)
Until now, unless you were on Shopify Plus, the only way to give specific customers automatic discounts was through:

  • Discount codes (customers had to enter them every time)

  • Custom Javascript that detected tags like “b2b” and applied a code in the background

Now? That’s over. You can now:

  1. Go to Discounts in your admin

  2. Select “Automatic

  3. Set eligibility by customer, segment, or group

No apps. No code. No friction.
Just clean, personalized offers – native to Shopify.

2.Chrome adds AI-generated store reviews
Google Chrome will now auto-generate summaries of online stores using public reviews from platforms like Trustpilot and Yotpo. While the intent is to improve buyer confidence, there’s a huge downside: You can’t control what’s generated. Expect reputational risks – and keep an eye on how your brand appears in Chrome’s AI snippets.

3. Shopify adds tag limit to draft orders
You can now only add 250 tags to draft orders in Shopify. Orders that already exceed that number are safe – but new tags will be blocked until the count is reduced.

4. BigCommerce rebrands to Commerce.com
BigCommerce is now officially Commerce.com, Inc. – the result of a $2.4M domain acquisition and a pivot toward “agentic commerce” powered by AI. The platform will still be known as BigCommerce, but the parent brand is clearly evolving.

5. U.S. de minimis exemption ends – new tariffs coming Aug 29
The $800 exemption for low-value international shipments is being eliminated, meaning more shipments will now be taxed, even from DTC brands outside China. Impacted? Reevaluate your 3PL and shipping costs – now

Tip of the Week:

Yotpo just shut down Email & SMS – here’s what to do next

If your retention stack relies on Yotpo for flows, promos, or customer journeys, here’s the short version: you’ve got until December 2025 to move. But with Q4 looming, waiting could be a costly mistake.

What happened:
Yotpo is sunsetting its Email and SMS products to focus on Reviews and Loyalty. They’ve laid off 200+ people and sold the Email/SMS customer base to Attentive.

What that means for your store:
If you're not planning to move to Attentive (or Omnisend), you need a new platform — fast.

What to do next:

✅ Audit your current setup:
Document every flow, campaign, and automated journey powered by Yotpo.

✅ Pick your new platform early:
Klaviyo, Bloomreach, DotDigital – whatever your pick, don’t delay.

✅ Migrate with precision:
It’s not just templates. You’ll need to migrate logic, lists, segments, analytics, and deliverability settings. Our team can help you do it cleanly and quickly.

Photo of the week

American Eagle’s new denim campaign with Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney used a cheeky “genes/jeans” tagline to grab attention. The ad split opinion – critics saw it as reinforcing Western beauty standards and risky wordplay, while supporters called it harmless fun and smart celebrity marketing. Either way, the buzz made the campaign go further than any billboard could.
