Shopify Update: Marketing Pixels Are No Longer “Always On” by Default
Shopify introduced a new default setting on January 13, 2026 that changes how marketing data is shared from your store — and many brands may not notice the impact until performance drops.
What’s new?
Marketing App Pixels (added by third-party apps) are now set to “Optimized” by default. Shopify actively monitors these pixels and may limit or pause data sharing if it doesn’t detect activity over time.
No alerts. No warnings. Data simply stops flowing — and resumes only when Shopify sees new signals.
Why this matters for brands
This update isn’t judging whether a tool is valuable to your business. It only checks for observable pixel activity, not real attribution or revenue impact.
That means:
Conversion data can quietly go missing
Ad platforms may underreport performance
Retargeting audiences can shrink
Optimization decisions may be based on incomplete data
If you rely on app-based tracking, this is a real risk.
Who’s affected?
App Pixels → affected by optimization
Custom Pixels & server-side tracking → not affected
Many high-growth brands are now moving away from pixel-only setups for this exact reason.
What you should do
At a minimum, review Settings → Customer Events → App Pixels and switch critical pixels to “Always on.”
But long-term, brands need tracking setups that don’t depend on fragile browser pixels.
This kind of change is easy to miss — and expensive to ignore.
On shopexperts.com, you can find Shopify experts who can:
Audit your tracking and attribution setup
Identify pixels at risk of being throttled
Implement Custom Pixels or server-side tracking
Ensure Meta, Google, and analytics tools receive complete data
If you’re not sure whether your data is still flowing as expected, now’s the time to check.

Nike was founded on January 25, 1964, long before “direct-to-consumer” became a buzzword. Originally launched as Blue Ribbon Sports by Phil Knight and his former track coach Bill Bowerman, the company began as a distributor for Japanese shoemaker Onitsuka Tiger before creating its own products. The lesson still holds today: enduring brands are built by obsessing over product quality, smart distribution, and long-term customer relationships.
