ShopOps weekly

The quiet strategy top Shopify brands are using right now.

Hi there,

Jon here.

This week Shopify gave developers something genuinely powerful — and slightly dangerous. Plus a checkout feature that's been Plus-only until now, a case study worth reading if you care about retention, and a brand that rebuilt a dying industry online.

  • Shopify AI Toolkit — your store can now be managed by AI agents. Here's what that actually means

  • Checkout order limits on all plans — no Plus required

  • Case study — €9K to €500K/month in 36 months. What actually drove it

  • Brand Story — local butchers were closing. He moved online instead

  • Don’t miss it — get paid to discover new Shopify apps before your competitors do

Shopify Updates You Can't Miss

1. Shopify just let AI agents run your store — here's what you need to know

Shopify released its AI Toolkit — a direct connection between AI coding tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and Gemini and your actual store. Not a chatbot. Not a suggestions panel. A live connection that can read your store data and execute changes.

  • Bulk update product titles, descriptions, and metafields across hundreds of listings

  • Rewrite content for AI search optimization at scale

  • Edit collections, tags, and inventory

  • Run custom reports

  • Modify theme files

All triggered by plain language. "Update every product in this collection to include material in the title" — and it happens.

🚩 The important caveat: when you grant mutation access, changes execute immediately on your live store. No draft mode, no preview, no undo. This is a developer tool, not a merchant feature – and it should be treated that way. Back up your product catalog and theme code before you let any agent near a live store.

Why it matters: This isn't Sidekick. Shopify already has a built-in AI assistant — this is different. The AI Toolkit opens the platform to every major AI coding tool, so developers can use whichever agent they prefer instead of being locked into one. The practical outcome: development cycles that used to take days can happen in hours.

What to do: If you're a developer or work with one — explore it. If you're a merchant without technical oversight, this one isn't for you yet. The right approach for most stores right now: use AI to work on product data in spreadsheets first, then import with Matrixify. Same outcome, zero risk to your live store.

Need a developer who can put this to work properly? A Shopify Plus engineer can set up the AI Toolkit with the right access controls, backups, and guardrails — so you get the speed without the risk.

2. Checkout order limits are now available on every plan

Minimum and maximum order subtotals in Checkout Blocks, previously a Plus-only feature, are now available on Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Plus. No extra app needed.

Why it matters: This is a quiet but practical unlock. Set a minimum order value to protect margins on small orders. Set a maximum to manage inventory or wholesale boundaries. Both enforced directly at checkout — no workarounds, no custom code.

What to do: If you've been managing this manually or through a separate app, check Checkout Blocks in your admin. You may be able to simplify your stack.

What We’re Seeing: The Smartest Brands Treat App Discovery Like a System

Something interesting is happening across the brands we talk to.

The ones growing fastest aren’t just using Shopify apps —
they’re getting to the best ones earlier than everyone else.

Not by luck. By design.

Inside app store research, brands are getting direct access to app teams before tools go mainstream — and using that to:

  • Replace expensive apps with better, cheaper alternatives

  • Get white-glove onboarding and direct founder support

  • Spot new tools before competitors even hear about them

One brand recently swapped a $5K/month app
→ for a similar tool under $1K/month
→ with better support and a stronger outcome

The interesting part: most of these insights come from 30-minute paid calls.

Not why they join — but why they stay.

A few live projects right now:

  1. THC / CBD brands → improve support & post-purchase ($250)

  2. AI SEO tools → shape visibility in ChatGPT & search ($150)

  3. Translation tools → influence a new Shopify plugin ($100)

  4. High-support stores → reduce ticket volume ($150)

You choose who to speak with — and when

Get paid, yes. But more importantly — get access most brands don’t have.

From Local Butcher Shops Closing to £650K/Month Online: How They Rebuilt Trust at Scale

Darren Fenton watched the same pattern repeat itself — independent butcher shops shutting down, customers drifting toward supermarkets, an entire experience disappearing. He didn't try to compete on convenience. He rebuilt what people had actually lost: knowledge, quality, and trust — but online and available anywhere.

Today The Fat Butcher does £650K a month. Built on retention, not acquisition.

❤️ Quick Pulse Check

Last week we asked: "How did you decide what to work on last time you made a store change?"

Almost half going on gut feeling alone. Not surprising — most stores don't have a structured testing process yet. With Rollouts now native to Shopify and Checkout Blocks expanding, there's never been a better time to start making data-driven calls.

This week's question:

What's your biggest blocker when it comes to growing revenue right now?

A) Getting more traffic
B) Converting the traffic I already have
C) Getting customers to come back and buy again

Reply with A, B, or C.
